RCS Business Messaging

One Step Closer to RCS Business Messaging

Last week, Google completed its rollout of RCS Chat services to Android users in the US via its messaging app. Google wants consumers to be able to experience RCS Chat services firsthand through their messaging app, while mobile carriers work to implement RCS via their networks. This first step focused on person-to-person (P2P) messaging, but we believe it is an indication of things to come for application-to-person (A2P) messaging.

In July, Google launched P2P RCS Chat services in the UK and France, which helped expedite the rollout of A2P RCS business messaging in these markets. Adopters of RCS in the UK and France have seen 140% better conversion rates, and 23% higher sales compared to SMS. Now that P2P RCS is gaining considerable momentum in several countries, mGage expects Google will follow up by launching RCS business messaging in more countries, in the hopes of accelerating RCS adoption.

This recent rollout of RCS Chat services in the US is another step in the right direction to launching RCS business messaging. We believe that Google may soon adopt the same strategy as they did in UK and France enabling A2P RCS messaging across all major carriers while the carriers work on delivering a Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative (CCMI). The service, based on GSMA’s Rich Communications Service (RCS) industry standard, will pave the way for consumers and businesses to interact in a far more engaging manner. mGage, along with Google, will continue working with carriers and operators to offer the most comprehensive RCS coverage to its clients.

Does my Android Have RCS Messaging?

Users must update their messaging app to enable RCS features. To check if your Android mobile device has Chat Services enabled, follow these steps:

  • Install (or Update) Google’s Messages and Carrier Services apps from the Play Store app on your phone. The Carrier Services app enables the latest communication services from mobile carriers, and support for enhanced features within the Messages app that you will be using to chat with your contacts (or with brands).
  • Open the Messages app and go to Settings
  • Tap on the ‘Chat features’option
  • If your phone is RCS-enabled, you should see the following message displayed:

“Status: Connected”

Chat features are ready for use.
